Scripture Union Daily Guide – 7th December 2024 Outline

After resettling in their towns in the seventh month, these returned exiles came together in one accord and with a unified purpose to restore the true worship of God in Jerusalem (v.1). What is the value of a community that is united? See Genesis 11:6.

Consider why the people, soon after they arrived in Jerusalem, chose to build the altar first. The seventh month (September-October) was a very important month for the Jews (Leviticus 23:33-36). Note how the leading men, Joshua and Zerubbabel, were careful to do everything that the Law of Moses required. They had learnt from what had sent them into exile. They were careful to worship and conduct themselves according to what is written in God’s word (vs.2,4&10).  How careful are you to seek to behave biblically in day-to-day worship and conduct? Notice how they funded this project (read v.7).

Next, they turned to rebuilding the temple. When the foundation was completed, they did praise and worship, “in the manner prescribed by King David” (v.10). In what manner do we carry out praise and worship in the church today? Perceptions differed about the foundation of the temple. While some responded in Jubilation, the older folks wept (v.12). What do you think was responsible for this?

* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
