Scripture Union Daily Guide 3 January 2025 Outline:

Notice the timing of the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Why do you think He waited for that long and what lessons can Christian ministers learn from this? For the reason for John’s imprisonment see Matthew 14:3-4. Also note the focus of His message (Matthew 4:17). Anyone who enters God’s kingdom moves from darkness into light, from death to life (Matthew 4:16; cf. 1 Peter 2:9).

Jesus calls His first disciples (Matthew 4:18-22): He issues an irresistible call to them to become His disciples and they responded immediately. From His call (Matthew 4:19), we deduce that a true disciple of Jesus is a person:
(a) who follows Jesus fully (come follow me);
(b) who is being changed by Jesus (I will make you);
(c) and engages in Jesus’ mission (become fishers of men). Thus, one of the first things Jesus did, at the start of

His public ministry, was to form a small group of twelve followers whom He would disciple.
Becoming a disciple involves, “accepting the beliefs and lifestyle of a master as one’s own” (see Mathew 16:24; Deuteronomy 5:33; Luke 6:40). Making disciples was the focus and pattern of Jesus ministry. Later, He would commission the Apostles (and His Church) to do the same. (See Matthew 28:18-20). Jesus’ holistic ministry involves “teaching” God’s word, “preaching the Goodnews of the Kingdom”, and “healing every disease and sickness among the people” (Matthew 4:23). Our ministry must follow the same pattern – be holistic.
