Scripture Union Daily Guide 31 October 2024 Outline

INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF DANIEL
Daniel and thousands of his fellow Jews were taken captive to Babylon after Jerusalem was over-run by King Nebuchadnezzar in 6o5B.C. At this time, he took away King Jehoiakin and several royal family
members. They were surrounded by idolatry, but Daniel and his three friends determined to stand firmly for the Lord.

They remained faithful to their God in a sinful and far away land. As a result, they were able to influence their pagan rulers to acknowledge that the Lord is God, and his rule extends over all the world. You may be far away from home, as you study this book. Be encouraged that God is there with you and be challenged to live a life that testifies to the lordship of our God.

Refugees who have to leave their home and country because of war are in a terrible plight. The situation of the young people in this story was much worse. They were not just refugees but slaves. They did not have even the rights accorded to refugees. King Nebuchadnezzar could cut off their heads any day of the week and nobody could question him. This powerful emperor had conquered their country and looted the temple of their God. In spite of that, they knew their God was the Almighty and they chose to obey His Law rather than their captor’s (v.8).

In what ways does God honour their faith in Him (vs.9, 19-20). Already, we learn two important
lessons from their experience. First is that they did learn the Law of God as children before they were captured. Evidently, their parents had done a good job of training them as commanded in Deuteronomy 6:6-7.

The second is how these boys chose to obey God when there was nothing to gain and everything to lose. This is only the beginning of their story! For Further Study

For reflection: Do you worship God so that He will give you health and wealth? What ifHe doesn’t? Read chapter :7-18

reinforcement of what you already know?
