TOPIC: YOUR PRAYER HAS BEEN HEARD
OPENING PRAYER: May my heart, O Lord, be receptive to your word as I meditate on it.

SCRIPTURE: LUKE 1:1-17

INTRODUCTION TO THE GOSPEL OF LUKE
This Gospel is an orderly account of the life of Jesus written by Luke, a physician, and a companion of Paul. It is the first part of a two-volume work, the second being Acts of the Apostles. Luke states clearly his purpose of writing: “So that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught” (1:4). It was meant to strengthen the faith of all believers, and to help them answer the attacks of unbelievers, displacing the ill-founded reports about Jesus. This Gospel presents the works of Jesus that are especially important for understanding the way of salvation.

Question(s) for Reflection
* Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Scripture Union Daily Guide – 19TH December 2024 Outline

King Herod the Great reigned from 37 B.C. to 4 A.D. He was responsible for the massacre of many children in Judea in his attempt to kill Jesus.
Righteous but barren (vs.5-7): How do you understand the situation of Zechariah and his wife in vs.6-7 (cf. Deuteronomy 28:1-4)? It must have been traumatic for them; obeying God and yet not having the blessing of children contrary to God’s promise. How does this help us to better understand and respond to the pain of brothers and sisters who serve the Lord and yet experience adverse situations today?

Hope for the faithful in affliction (vs.8-17): Zechariah did not allow the barrenness to affect his commitment to the Lord (vs.8-9). And it was while he was serving in the temple and the congregation was worshipping and praying, that the angel of the Lord appeared to him and brought a word of encouragement, assurance, and a promise (v.13). In view of v.7b, how would you have received the angel’s message if you were in Zechariah’s situation? An answer to our prayer often comes in a way that is beyond the ordinary and our comprehension.

Practice/Word Application
What next? Reflect on the purpose of John and the parent’s responsibility (vs.14-15). How are you faring in your walk with the Lord?
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
Father, help me to be dedicated to your service and so fulfil your purpose for my life.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Philippians 4:8
