Ethan, the author of this psalm was one of the Levitical musicians. The psalm celebrates the glorious reign of David with a deliberate praise and adoration for God’s faithfulness. It is Messianic as it refers at some points to the ultimate endorsement of Christ’s everlasting dynasty (Psalm 89:28,29,34-37).
The psalmist highlights some attributes and might of God for which we should praise Him. He declares that God rules over nature and crushes every opposition. He founded the world, and His arm is endued with power. Find out the other attributes (Psalm 89:5-14). In your own present circumstance, what are the things that can motivate you to praise God?.
God renews His covenant with David concerning his throne and seed (Psalm 89:3-4,19). Psalm 89:4 is fulfilled in the eternal reign of Christ, the seed of David. God describes David as “my chosen one”, “my servant” and as a man after His own heart (Acts 13:22). God declared these, not because David was sinless but despite his many sins.
We are also the chosen of God through the mercies of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Explore what He expects of us inPsalm 89:16-18 (cf. Ephesians 1:4). Are these true of you?

Meditate on the lyrics of the chorus – “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever…” as you extol God’s faithfulness to you.
