Daily Guide (Scripture Union) 22nd September 2024 Outline:

The joy of the Israelites at the arrival of the Ark was short lived. Why was this so (vs.10-11)? It is ironic that the Philistines were fearful of the same Ark and yet, they defeated the Israelites. What was God trying to tell both groups (vs.7-8)? Testimonies are powerful ways of declaring the power of the Lord.

Notice that this was coming from their enemies who have heard about the great things Israel’s God had done. How do we tell or live out the workings of God in our lives and communities of faith?
The defeat of the Israelites dealt a blow on the Eli priestly line. The prophecy concerning his sons was fully fulfilled. This means that Samuel takes on full leadership of God’s people. How easily we can be replaced in the service when we are unfaithful!

Meanwhile the Philistines understood the implications of having the Israelites’ God in the battlefield. They were afraid but they were determined to defeat the Israelites. They would have thought that their victory over Israel was based on their military prowess, but it’s because God had deserted His people hence their defeat. How does this relate to some of the battles we fight? God delights more in our obedience than many other things we substitute for it.

Stand up, stand up, for Jesus, Ye soldiers of the cross
1. Stand up, stand up for Jesus
ye soldiers of the cross;
lift high his royal banner,
it must not suffer loss.
From vict’ry unto vict’ry
his army he shall lead
till ev’ry foe is vanquished
and Christ is Lord indeed.

2. Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
the trumpet call obey;
forth to the mighty conflict
in this his glorious day.
Ye that are men now serve him
against unnumbered foes;
let courage rise with danger
and strength to strength oppose.

3. Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
stand in his strength alone;
the arm of flesh will fail you,
ye dare not trust your own.
Put on the gospel armor,
each piece put on with prayer;
where duty calls or danger,
be never wanting there.

4 Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
the strife will not be long;
this day the noise of battle,
the next, the victor’s song.
To him that overcometh
a crown of life shall be;
he with the King of glory
shall reign eternally.

Closing Prayer
Lord, give me ears to hear you, eyes to see you and heart to understand you.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 37:11
“But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”
