When we are in serious trouble, we can rely on a true friend. Jonathan was such a friend to David. Jonathan was ready and willing to do anything for David, even to the point of going against the murderous plans of his father. He had represented him to the King before (19:6-7), but sadly, the demons in the King did not let him keep to his promise (19:9-10). David trusted Jonathan with his life, and the two of them made a pact together. This was based squarely on what the two of them knew of God’s promise to David (vs.12-16).

One of the lessons I learned in the first Scripture Union camp I attended as a teenager was this. We were encouraged to choose a friend who would be our Prayer Partner. The two of us would share our joys and our sorrows in confidence when we meet to pray together; and we would encourage and rebuke each other as necessary in our journey of faith. Even today, over 60 years later, this is something I continue to cherish in my Christian life.
